What is chlamydia?
The best known STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) are chlamydia and gonorrhea. Chlamydia is officially called chlamydia trachomatis. Both men and women can contract this. Only for men this STD is less common. It is also more common among young people.
Chlamydia is caused by a bacterium. It infects the mucous membranes of the urethra, the cervix, the anus, the sperm or throat.
How do you recognize chlamydia?

- pain when urinating
- pain during intercourse
- intermediate blood loss
- more or different discharge than normal
- itching at the anus, (bloody) discharge in stools, and diarrhoea.
- pain or a burning sensation when urinating
- watery discharge from the penis (usually in the morning)
- pain in the scrotum
- itching at the anus
If chlamydia is not treated in time, it can cause inflammation in the urethra, anus and / or cervix. It can also end up in the fallopian tubes and lead to fallopian tubes. For example, there may be scars on the fallopian tubes and they can become clogged. Ultimately, it can also lead to infertility, or even an ectopic pregnancy.
If you are pregnant, there is a chance that you will transfer chlamydia to your baby. As a result, the foetus can develop a serious eye infection or pneumonia. In that case, contact your doctor immediately. With proper treatment you can prevent your baby from contracting chlamydia.

How do you prevent chlamydia?
